What is scarier than a clown that isn’t trying to be funny and is down in the sewers? Whether it is the 1990 or the 2017 version of this 1986 novel by Stephen King, this coming of age film is filled with the coolest cast of characters. We do find it peculiar that most horror thrillers with a group of kids are often placed at a time period during the 1980s. Watch out for a fountain of blood scene. It just looks too real.
This list will not be complete without a haunted house. Supposedly based on a true story as reported by paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, they investigate a house with an evil portal, releasing horrible spirits who end up possessing the living. Numerous scenes of the characters looking at their reflection to find someone else behind their backs would definitely get you jumping off the couch. Dog lovers will also hate the first 20 minutes of this film.
A psychological thriller of a whodunit murder case takes place for a day as the victims are only left until 6pm to figure out their escape from a serial murderer called the Jigsaw Killer. Better have the stomach to witness the blood and gore, and don’t miss a scene since there’s tons of flashbacks in between.
4. THE SHINING
Released in 1980, this film based on Steven King’s 1977 bestseller still proves to give you the goosebumps. A frustrated writer brings his wife and son to stay at an isolated motel, and ends up going insane. Director Stanley Kubrick created a visual eeriness all throughout the film and threaded the plot as thick as the air in Room 237. Even in your dreams, do not go in there.
5. THE EXORCIST
Written by William Peter Blatty in 1973 based on his 1971 novel, this supernatural horror film is definitely ahead of its time. The possessed character, Regan MacNeil’s gruesome face, her deep demonic voice, and her unforgettable spider walk down the stairs are stuff nightmares are made of. Good luck if you are not planning to watch this during the day.
