Earlier this month, I went on an all girl's trip to Bali to celebrate a friend's bachelorette. The last time I had been to Bali was two years ago with my husband to attend a friend’s wedding. That time, we stayed at a little villa in Seminyak, right next door to the famous beach club Potatohead. It was a lovely little villa, that had beautiful intricate Balinese architecture and interiors.
This time around, the girls decided to book a villa in Canggu, which is about a 30-40 minute drive to the main area of Seminiyak. The Shalimar villas (which means ‘nest of love’) are comprised of three unique villas that are located side-by-side with one another. All three villas have their own private pools, spacious outdoor dining and living spaces, and are staffed with cooks, housekeepers, and a manager to attend to the guests’ needs. We stayed at the Makanda villa, which has 4 large bedrooms and an outdoor bathroom each!
The Makanda villa is like a modern Balinese beach house, with very tall ceilings, an open kitchen, modern and minimalist furniture, and lots of lounging space. You see elements of Balinese architecture in the exposed thatch roofing, and in the use of teak wood and stone. And although its design is contemporary, you still feel the culture and Hindu influences throughout the villa. My favorite parts of the villa: the dining area IN the pool (how cool!); the bedrooms with floor to ceiling windows overlooking the lush garden; and the outdoor bath tub!
If you are traveling in a group and are looking for that relaxing Bali experience, I highly recommend the Shalimar villas. The villas are secluded, with rice fields on one side of it and the beach on the other. It has very tasteful architecture and interiors, and the staff are amazing. Overall a great experience!
