I asked my friend Ivo Butchta (you will see his huge Bench billboard on Edsa at Guadalupe alongside Lovi Poe and Tom Rodriguez) to give us his top tips to becoming a successful male model. Ivo has worked with brands such as Versace, D&G, Dsquared, Calvin Klein, Burberry and recently Bench here in the Philippines!

At the beginning your career as a male model, your portfolio is everything. Whether the job is unpaid (for the purpose of building your portfolio), or a big campaign for a well-known company, give 100% in every shoot.

Your agency sends your portfolio to potential clients to let them know there is a new face in town.

    Be prepared for castings

Going to castings is an important step in booking jobs. This is your opportunity to showcase your personality and why you are perfect for the role. Understand what the casters are looking for. For example, if they want someone clean shaven and dressed to the nines, as opposed to scruffy and in casual wear, do what you can to fit the brief.

Be mindful of the details; sometimes that makes all difference.

    Maintain your relationships

As a model, you are always surrounded by people: clients, agents, photographers, other models etc. Maintain your relationships and connections. Be yourself and exude confidence, without being arrogant. If people have a bad experience with you, they will remember that and won’t want to work with you again.

    Be active on Social Media

Use your social media to let the world know what you’ve been up to, which brands you have worked with recently and what country you are currently in. Engage with your fans and show them that you appreciate their support. Always stay loyal and be approachable, I wouldn’t be where I am today without them.

    Enjoy the job

As a model you are not working every day, so you should use your days off wisely. Work out, eat well and socialise. Don’t feel disheartened if you aren’t working constantly because you get to travel the world, meet people from multiple countries, and attend the best parties. It could be worse!
